The subtitle-like video installation And nothing but the truth, most explicitly connecting to a trans* perspective in the series, questions the systems — legal and medical amongst others — that end up making untruthfulness a requirement to being authentic to oneself. In the exhibition Happy Hours, this work was installed in a window niche, creating a projection that simultaneously occupies gallery space and public space.
“And nothing but the truth is about claiming power, too. There is an element of the trickster that runs through its narratives, about learning to perform a system in a way that holds up counter-fiction to fiction. If the binary can be strategically occupied, guerilla-style, to gain access, this also reveals its intrinsic inadequacy to fully contain gendered experience. Transness, and nonbinariness in particular, always exceeds the tightly controlled peripheries of the cis gaze, even when this excess is the source of its disciplining.”
Angela Lieber, catalogue for Happy Hours
The truth, The whole truth, And nothing but the truth is a series of three works, engaging with experiences of navigating the truth regarding one’s own reality and biography, when being truthful about oneself is impossible, dangerous, unrealistic or simply incomprehensible for others.
